பெரு நாட்டின் எல்லைக்குட்பட்ட அடர்ந்த அமேசான் காடுகளில், சமீபத்தில் நடத்தப்பட்ட ஆய்வுகளில், 441 புதிய தாவரங்கள், விலங்குகள் மற்றும் பூச்சியினங்கள் கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. இதில் குறிப்பாக, தாவரங்களை உண்ணும் சுறா மீன்கள், வெளிர்நிற பாம்புகள், பூனை போல் முகம் கொண்ட குரங்கு வகைகள் ஆகியவை அடங்கும். இந்த புதிய குரங்கு இனம் பற்றி, அமேசான் காடுகளில், ஆராய்ச்சியில் ஈடுபட்ட ஆராய்ச்சியாளர் தாமஸ் டெப்லர் கூறுகையி்ல, 'புதிதாக கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டுள்ள இந்த குரங்கினம் மிகவும் அபூர்வமானதாகும். குட்டி குரங்குகள் கிட்டத்தட்ட பூனை போலவே தோற்றம் அளிக்கின்றன. மேலும், மகிழ்ச்சி ஏற்படும் போது, பூனை போலவே ஒலி எழுப்பி, தகவல் பரிமாற்றத்தை வெளிப்படுத்துகின்றன என தாமஸ் டெப்லர் கூறியுள்ளார்.

A new species of monkey that purrs like a cat is among 441 new species of animals and plants discovered over a 4 year period in the vast, under-explored Amazon rain-forest. Found between 2010 and 2013, the species include a flame-patterned lizard, a thumbnail-sized frog, a vegetarian piranha, a brightly coloured snake, and a beautiful pink orchid, according to World Wildlife Fund. 
Discovered by a group of scientists and compiled by World Wildlife Fund, the new species number 258 plants, 84 fish, 58 amphibians, 22 reptiles, 18 birds and one mammal. The total does not include countless discoveries of insects and other invertebrates.
