Japanese Wisdom at Chennai Book Fair: Embrace the Spirit of Prosperity At the upcoming Chennai Book Fair, we invite you to explore the very spirit that resurrected Japan from the ashes of war to world-recognized prosperity.
At our stall, you'll find profound books, easy-to-digest booklets, and engaging manga "Kinben" for all generations—offering diverse ways to dive into the self-help spirit, the eternal pillar of success. About 200 years ago, when Britain was experiencing significant economic growth nurtured by the Industrial Revolution, Japan produced Ninomiya Sontoku—a remarkable figure who embodied the "spirit of capitalism." Born into challenging circumstances, Sontoku never complained about his environment. Instead, he applied extraordinary effort to generate wealth and taught others the path to true success. Until his death at 70, Sontoku helped save around 600 villages, lifting people out of poverty through his profound success principles. Even after his passing, his legacy continued to inspire generations to come. Eiichi Shibusawa, who contributed to hundreds of enterprises including today's three major megabanks, humbly proclaimed, "I aspire to continue practicing the four virtues (Kinben, Sincerity, Moderation, Endowment)left by Master Sontoku." Also, statues of Sontoku became symbols of diligence, installed in elementary schools across Japan. In 1941, Japan entered World War II. Two atomic bombs and relentless air raids turned Japan's land into ash. Yet, the spirit of prosperity that Sontoku had planted became the phoenix that resurrected Japan. In the post-war era, countless entrepreneurs rebuilt and expanded the Japanese economy, driven by the same spirit of diligence. Matsushita Konosuke—the "god of management" who founded Panasonic—embodied Sontoku's teaching of aligning moral principles with economic progress. Even modern business leaders like Kazuo Inamori, who founded multiple companies, succeeded by practicing Sontoku's principle. It was this spirit of diligence—Japan's spiritual cornerstone—that allowed the nation to rise even when its land was burned. However, the spirit that regenerated Japan now whispers. We seek to reclaim it and spread it as a power that leads nations and individuals to true success.
