Thirukkural translation in English (ஆங்கிலத்தில் திருக்குறள் மொழிபெயர்ப்பு)

Since new translations of the Kural in English continue to appear every year, it is impossible to keep track of all of them. It is safe to say that over 126 translations have appeared so far, with almost all of them being published in print. More than 90% of these translations are by Indians, almost all of them being Tamils. Though translations by foreigners began as early as 1794 by N.E. Kindersley, the Kural has not attracted them as much as the mystic classic Tao Te Ching has done. Thomas Hitoshi Pruiksma’s verse ren- dering published by Beacon Press in the US in 2022 is the latest one by a non-Indian.

There are quite a few English translations con- fined to websites (e.g. by Vaidehi Herbert of Hawaii and T. Kannan of Pollachi) and translations that are waiting to get published (e.g. that of R. Manimohan of Coimbatore). All types of translations have ap- peared in English, in prose (e.g. Drew and Lazarus), in rhymed couplets (e.g. Shuddhanantha Bharathi, G.U. Pope) and in free verse (P.S. Sundaram). There is even an explanatory poetic English translation in free verse (by V. Perampalam in 2003) and on the other extreme, single liner renderings of the Kural and Naladiyar by an unknown author, available only online! A study on the Thirukkural translations in En- glish is by itself a research topic for a doctoral thesis.
