Over 60% of the people of Meghalaya speak two lan- guages, namely Khasi and Garo, roughly in equal numbers. It was a pleasant surprise to stumble upon a translation of the Kural in Garo language in the library of the Central In- stitute of Classical Tamil, Chennai. Garo thus became the first Northeast Indian language to see a Thirukkural trans- lation. The Kural is yet to be translated into Khasi which is a member of the Austroasiatic family, totally different from Garo which belongs to the Sino-Tibetan family.
The Manipuri translation of the Kural in 2012 might have received a lot of publicity as it was released by the CICT in an era of social media and widespread internet access through smart phones. However, more than a de- cade ago, Antoni Selvadoss had singlehandedly taken the task of translating the Kural into Garo language. Selvadoss has his roots in Thiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu. Having learnt Garo language being an employee of the state’s education department of the state government, he took the task of translating the Kural in couplets.
