When we think of Nepal and the history of Indic literature, what comes to the minds of Indologists is the librar- ies in Nepal that have preserved thousands of copies of ancient manuscripts. Nepal has been a storehouse of ancient manu- scripts, particularly of the Mahayana Buddhist sect in Sanskrit language. For instance, the discovery of the 10th century text mystic work Charyapada was possible only because of Nepal’s tradition of preserving literary works. However, the Nepali language as such evolved only in the post 10th century CE.
With around 30 lakh speakers in India alone, Nepali language got the official status by the government of India. Considering the presence of associations run by the Nepali Tamil communities like the Kathmandu Tamil Sangam, the translation of the Kural into Nepali could have happened much earlier. All attempts by the project team members failed to get any evidence of the work being translated into this Indo-Aryan language of the Himalayas earlier. Thanks to the efforts made by the Central Institute of Classical Tamil (CICT), Chennai, Sunita Dahal became the first author to render the Kural into Nepali.
