In Jan 2024, the government of India announced its decision to add Persian as the 9th classical language of India. Despite being a cultivated language with a long literary history, a significant part of it in India itself, the need for making a Kural translation available was not realized until very recently. In 2022, the CICT, Chennai brought out the first and only translation in Persian language so far. Considering the fact that the first translations in Urdu and Arabic appeared 40-50 years ago, the delay in getting a rendering done in Persian is perplexing. It is relevant to point out that the first translator of the Kural into Arabic, Mr. Yousuf Kokan Umari, was once the Head of Arabic, Urdu and Persian department at the University of Madras. He did not translate the Kural into Persian, contrary to the information given in some of the publications like the bibliography published by the Institute of Asian Studies, Chennai in 2001.Oromo, Amharic etc.).
