The only Indian Austroasiatic language to see a Thirukkural translation is Santali. The other translation into a member of this language happened to be in Khmer, the national language of Cambodia. With 7.6 million people, Santali is apparently the third most spoken Aus- troasiatic language in the world, after Vietnamese and Khmer. Thanks to the initiatives taken by a late Tamil poet T. Jeyakumar who worked at the SBI in Jharkhand, Rev- erend Father V. Richard translated the Kural into Santali. The translator is an author, poet and a missionary who worked for the upliftment of the Santal tribe in the state. The work was published by a Coimbatore city-based lit- erary association called Nerunchi Ilakkiya Iyakkam, pos- sibly in 2021. Unlike most tribal languages, Santali has its own script called Ol Chiki, recognized as one of the official scripts by the Indian government. However, from the cover picture of this Santali Thirukkural publication, it appears that the translator has preferred the Roman script. Suffering from Parkinson’s disease, Father Rich- ard could translate only the first division (Arattuppal) of the Kural.
