Like Malay and Indonesian, Fijian language is also an Austronesian language into which the Kural has been translated. The other major Austronesian languages without a Thirukkural translation are Sundanese, Javanese, Tagalog, Malagasy and Cebuano. The fact that the family has more than 1000 languages is another matter! Over 80,000 Tamils live in Fiji, and both the Fijian translations (by Berwick and Geharty) must have transpired at the behest of the Tamil diaspora of the island. Thanks to N.V.K. Ashraf Kunhunu, Paul Geharty’s translation is available on the net (http://kuraltranslations. blogspot.com/).
