Since 1931, when the first translation in Gujarati was done by Najnklal Choksi, only two more translations have appeared in the Gujarati language. A state where Mahatma Gandhi – who believed in non-vio- lence, non-killing, abstinence, truthfulness and vegetari- anism – has surprisingly paid little attention to rendering the sayings of Thiruvalluvar who stood for non-violence and vegetarianism like no other poet of the Indian his- tory did. Gandhi himself came to know of the Thirukku- ral from Leo Tolstoy during the early part of his political career, as early as 1910. Mahatma Gandhi’s life in the end proved to be a living embodiment of the teachings of Thiruvalluvar.
One of the early translations initiated by the Central Institute of Classical Tamil (CICT), Chennai was in Gujarati language which Hon. Prime Minister Modi re- leased on the 16th of Jan 2015. This was the last trans- lation of the Kural to appear in Gujarati.
