Among the Dravidian languages, Kannada comes next only to Tamil in its antiquity of a literary tradition. As a result, Tamil and Kannada are the only two Dravidian languages to have found a place in Sahitya Akademi’s anthology of Ancient Indian Literature. In spite of this, Kannada for some reasons has seen the least number of translations when compared to the other major languages in the South. While Malayalam and Telugu have either crossed or nearing 20, Kannada has wit- nessed only a dozen translations (maybe a few more the proj- ect team might have missed out). The first translation into Kannada happened only by 1910 (by R. Narasimhachar) while Telugu in comparison got its first translation in 1880 itself (by K. Venkataramana). Among all the translations, M. Pasumalai Arasu’s translation published in 2004 would be worth looking into, as it is in old Kannada. In a way, he is the Ramesan Nair of the Kannada world.
