Thirukkural translations in Latin (லத்தீன் மொழியில் திருக்குறள் மொழிபெயர்ப்பு)

Though no longer a spoken language, ancient clas- sics of the world invariably begin with a Latin translation. The first ever translation of the Chinese classic Tao Te ching in a Western language was in Latin in 1788. Even before that the Kural was translated into Latin by C.J. Beschi (1700-1742). The Dhammapada and Bhagavad Gita translations in Latin came only in the 19th century. The other well-known transla- tion of the Kural in Latin is by Karl Graul who is well-known for his earlier German translation.

• Beschi, C.J. (1730) The Sacred Kural of Tiruvalluva Nayanar (Edited by G.U. Pope). Henry Frowde, London and also Asian Educational Services, Delhi. Third book on Love was not translated.
• Unknown author. Tiruvalluvar Kural Versione Latio- na (aduotationibus glosarioque illustratus). (E.S. Ariel, the translator of the Kural into French, mentions this unpublished manuscript of the 18th century which has been deposited in the Bibliotheque Nationale of France, Paris).
