The government of India has recognized Odia as a classical language based on its long literary history and old inscriptions. Odisha, despite being an Indo-Aryan language, has a script that deceptively looks like a Dravidian script. As far as translating the Kural into Odia is concerned, the state of Odisha has witnessed 8 translations, more than what Bengali, Marathi, Gujarathi, Urdu or Punjabi have produced. The Thirukkural publications have come from Bhubanesh- war, Balangir, Cuttack, Sambalpur, and outside Odisha, from Delhi and recently by CICT in Chennai. Noteworthy among the various translations is the 1994 text by G.N. Das. This retired IAS officer from Odisha, holds the distinction of translating the Kural into Odia, English and Hindi.
