Arabic appears to be the only Semitic language into which the Kural has been translated so far. Being the most widely spoken Semitic language, it is only natural that all the six translations (partial or complete) have been in Arabic. Dr. John Samuel, the Director of the Institute of Asian Studies, Chennai, mentions that the Kural has indeed been translated into Hebrew, the next most significant language in the family. We have not been able to verify this claim despite our honest efforts. The first translation of the Kural into Arabic was done by Mohammed Yousuf Kokan Umari in 1980, which was a retranslation from English. The credit of rendering a complete translation of the Kural into Arabic directly from Tamil goes to Dr. Jahir Husain in 2020.
There are many major languages under the Afro-Asiatic phylum or family, under which comes the Semitic branch, into which the Kural has not been translated yet (e.g. Somali, Oromo, Amharic etc.).
